My Journey: From IT to Education
I began my career with a degree in Economics, followed by working as an IT engineer in South Korea. However, after moving to Australia in 1997, my journey took a new direction. As I settled into life here, I discovered my true passion for education, which led me to open the JS Education Centre (정석수학전문학원) in 2004 in Strathfield Plaza—an area known as a hub for coaching colleges.
At JS Education Centre, I emphasised personalised learning by keeping class sizes small, typically with just 2-3 students. However, most of my classes were even smaller, with just 1-2 students per session. I made this choice despite the lower profit per hour, as I believed that the close, individualised attention would lead to better outcomes for my students. This approach allowed me to focus deeply on each student's unique needs and challenges, ensuring they received the support necessary to succeed.
Unfortunately, after several years of navigating many changes—including the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and shifting educational dynamics—I had to make the difficult decision to close the Strathfield centre. It was a challenging period of adjustment, but this eventually led to the next chapter in my journey. I transitioned into private, in-home tutoring under the name JS Maths in Gordon, where I now live. This move has allowed me to continue my passion for teaching, offering highly personalised tutoring that helps students grow academically while building their confidence and love for learning.
